Drug Name:Amphotericin B

Mechanism of Action:
  • Binds to ergosterol in fungal cell membranes, causing membrane permeability and cell death
Use:
  • Treatment of severe systemic fungal infections, such as invasive candidiasis, aspergillosis, and cryptococcosis
  • Prophylaxis in immunocompromised patients at high risk of fungal infections
Side Effects:
  • Nephrotoxicity
  • Infusion-related reactions (fever, chills, hypotension)
  • Electrolyte imbalances (hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia)
  • Anemia
  • Thrombophlebitis
Contraindications:
  • Hypersensitivity to amphotericin B or any component of the formulation
  • Severe renal impairment
